Wellcome to my site, my paintings and how i came to be here.

The photograph pretty well sums up the way I work. Most of my paintings are made directly in front of the subject, alla prima or plein air would be the most likely description. You can see my easel and set up. The small person is my son, Luca, he’s busy trying to distract me by blowing bubbles. The picture was taken by my wife.
I work in oil paints, any subject is fine, as long as there’s an idea there i’ll give it a go. Sometimes it’s just a hunch, sometimes the way light falls, other times it’s design, pattern or shape. There are also days when inspiration evades me, so I just set up and paint anyway.
I paint the life I live, that i’m living in. I’m not sure what else I would do. There are subjects everywhere, when you realise how much joy is in a simple life. One doesn’t need to go far.
I trained in the UK and then in Florence. Italy really made a lasting impression on me and I felt I might return one day.
In 2022 a moment presented itself, shocked by Brexit and in a post covid world, we thought let’s try a new life. We said our goodbyes, packed the car and went. It was that quick, in the end the only way. We’ll sort everything out as we go (otherwise we’ll never do this).
Two years on and here we are on the edge of Tuscany and Umbria. I’m working (thanks to my clients) and I’m painting life here. For now this is a blog. I’ve been asked to share the work and so here goes…
Best wishes Rupert
